setting:
[ in depth info ] The country of Efith, divided into five states, the East State (wind), the South State (fire), the West State (earth), the North State (water) and the Capital State (the Mysteries). Efith is reigned by the Sacred Council that stays at the temple in the Capital State where they guard the mysteries of the elements and in communication with the leads of the four other temples as well as the non-magic senate make decisions for the whole land. In constant war with Reece, south of their borders.
history:
Until he was ten, Timachus went by another name and spoke another language and knew only of war. Then, the Efithian soldiers came and along with half a village, he was taken to the Capital to be sold as a slave. The other half of the village suffered the kinder fate of death. Timachus was bought by an old scholar who taught him to read and write in Efithian and was planning on using him as private secretary in his faculty department, when a friend of the man, Sarica, noticed the boy, now a young man of 18, and wanted him to be his. Slaves are not allowed to sleep with their masters, so as soon as Sarica had talked the old scholar into parting with him, he freed him and adopted him as his legal heir. They were only fifteen years apart in age. Now they were family.
Sarica soon began noticing that Timachus liked to write poetry and encouraged him to make a living of it. In Efith, all poetry was sacred and in metres, while in Reece, poetry was freer and unrhymed. So Timachus took the form of Reecian poetry and translated it directly into Efithian. It worked surprisingly well and his poetry soon gained attention. Now, ten years later, he is one of the most celebrated poets in all of Efith. He earns his own living, and he is not dependent on Sarica, at least not for bread. In other ways, he cannot break free of the other man's claim on him.
Until, one day, he meets the younger fire priest, Otanius, a passionate man and Timachus falls almost instantenously in love with him. He fills his heart, his mind and his poems. But can a former slave, owing everything to another man, and a priest who is required to be celibate, find each other and overcome all odds?
personality:
Best described as a gentle giant, at his six feet four height, Timachus is a soft-spoken, generally calm presence who would rather have paper cuts than fight with swords and is forever grateful to his master for purchasing him before he could be taken to the legions.
He is an innovative writer who uses his familiarity with another culture than the Efithian to add to his writing.
Although not ashamed of having been a slave, he is sometimes slightly apprehensive at the nature of his relationship with Sarica, with how his feelings for the other man are very mixed, good and bad at the same time. Mostly, he feels trapped in the awareness of owing everything to Sarica and the implications of that frustrate him endlessly.
Definitely the bottom bitch in that relationship, but has the potential to both lead and give in other constellations.
Still carries the trauma of the war in his homeland with him inside and drinks too much to dull his nerves. When Sarica hosts his orgies, Timachus is the one to drink himself into such a stupor that he'll be surprised the next day about whom he's slept with overnight. He and Sarica have a semi-open relationship, where Sarica doesn't mind him (even wants him to be) sleeping with others as long as it's someone he's chosen or approves of.
Mainly writes poetry that juxtaposes his life in the city with his former life in the countryside, or his former life as a slave with his life as a free man now. The poetic form of taking two different things and comparing them has been named after him, timachusis. Also writes sacred poetry/prayers to have burned at the temple regularly. Has immersed himself in Efithian religion completely, although he grew up believing in other rituals (like blood sacrifices and offering of food and drink). Only after he meets Otanius does he begin writing love poetry which is otherwise the most widely written form of poetry in the country.
